Democracy Forever
Our Purpose
On January 6 2021 America narrowly escaped an insurrection against our electoral process and on the individuals who are in the second, third and fourth line of presidential succession[i]. The Capital Police and District Police were unprepared and were not reinforced until late in the day. We have much to be thankful for, perhaps most of all, the bravery and devotion to duty of the Capital Police and District Police; and for the quick actions of our Secret Service in protecting Vice President Pence.
On February 14, the Senate, sitting as the Court of Impeachment acquitted former President Donald J. Trump[ii], of the High Crime of inciting the January 6th insurrection. A 2/3rd majority vote of the Senate was not achieved. And for our society, the conviction or the acquittal of former President Trump would not have changed the perilous circumstances under which we live today.
American Democracy and all our institutions and norms are not secure. For the past four years, the Trump Administration has worked to weaken our country, domestically and on the international front. And most important, they have inflamed our divisions. We are a divided nation, in some ways similar to the years that led up to the Civil War, but with divisions not particular to states vs. states but individual vs. individual.
We must and we can step back from this growing division and work together to re-unite America. That starts with supporting our democratic form of government by word and deed. And our work must include a rejection of violent actions by any and all parties in our republic. Otherwise we add to the forces of those who would destroy America.
Those who are willing must make their pro-democracy viewpoints known. Through forming a group that works to preserve and strengthen our democracy we will have an impact on our national discussions and help bring our country through the coming trials.
This is the purpose of “Democracy Forever.” You are invited to join in this effort.
